 lessons

Lessons include a creative curriculum in classical, popular & jazz styles. Students of all ages, children, teens and adults are welcome. Each student is valued as an individual, and by developing a special relationship based on trust and respect, I seek to find a program of study that is suitable for each aspiring musician. Lessons are held in a comfortable studio environment in Watertown, MA.

Beginner students are introduced to the skills of reading & writing conventional music notation, helping them gain rhythmical precision and acquiring fluency in reading music scores. Physical posture, techniques of muscle relaxation & a proper hand position, to the technique of producing a full, rich sound on the keyboard, and the skill of sustaining concentration through the length of the composition are taught.

At intermediate and higher levels, I work on further developing these skills through the performance of a more complex repertoire, encouraging students to listen to, and play different genres of music. Interpretation of musical pieces & musical aesthetics are discussed alongside each piece learnt, enrichening the students learning experience & interpretation of the piece.

Reasons for taking up music as a pursuit differ from individual to individual. For most children, it is an encouraging parent that plays a major role in the choosing of this activity. Very often adults choose to take it up as a means to rediscover their artistic and creative potential - for some it is an unaccomplished childhood dream, for others, an opportunity to rectify a childhood experience at the piano that went wrong.

For the serious student, an acquirement of technique, accuracy, performance of a varied repertoire, study of theory & analysis of musical forms, critical listening and the development of higher musical skills are stressed upon as valuable tools in the achievement of musical goals.

Above all, students are encouraged to work at accomplishing a standard beyond what they would normally set for themselves. An approach to an efficient and disciplined keyboard practice style is discussed and reviewed frequently. Assignments are structured in a way so as to make the learning process more of an enjoyable discovery of oneself and the art of music.

~ Lesson Policies & Procedures
Students can take an hour's lesson (recommended) or a half-hour lesson a week. Should a 5-yr old register for a one-hour lesson? Certainly! I have had children as young as 4, who were happy to devote an hour of their time to piano - if the lesson captures the child and the child displays a combination of curiosity and adventure, serious study becomes child's play!

~ Fees & Schedules
Fees are payable monthly on the day of the student’s first lesson that month. Lesson times are considered permanent. Refunds will not be made for students who commit to other activities which conflict with their lesson or class.

~ Credits & Re-scheduling lessons
If 3 days notice has been given, a credit or a re-scheduled lesson will be arranged for. These lessons are scheduled at the mutual convenience of the teacher and the student. Students are obliged to attend these make-up lessons, or stand to forfeit the make-up lesson. Due to scheduling complications, absences from group workshops cannot be made up. Should I cancel a class, a full refund or credit will be given.
